TEMBISA — Born and bred in Tembisa, Dimakatso Mkhize, a psychology honours graduate from the University of South Africa (UNISA), is proving that passion and perseverance can open doors beyond one’s field of study. Although she doesn’t have a background in business, her love for entrepreneurship and fragrances led her to join Perfume Co. Africa, a black-owned fragrance company making waves in South Africa’s beauty industry.

Perfume Co. Africa, founded by Bathabile Moreki, manufactures and distributes high-quality, oil-based perfumes inspired by world-renowned designer brands. The company operates under a network marketing model, allowing individuals to join for just R99 — gaining access to stock and the opportunity to build their own fragrance businesses. Dimakatso joined the company in March 2025 and has since been growing her business while learning valuable sales and leadership skills.

“What makes our brand stand out is the quality,” says Mkhize. “Our perfumes are long-lasting, oil-based, and inspired by top designer brands — yet sold at an affordable price that makes luxury accessible to everyone.”

For Dimakatso, joining Perfume Co. was not just about sales — it was about aligning her passion for business and her love for people. “I’ve always had a passion for business and working with people,” she explains. “This platform allows me to do both while growing personally and professionally.”

Like many township entrepreneurs, she has faced her share of challenges. Finding affordable and secure selling spaces remains one of the biggest obstacles. “Many malls are either too expensive or already full of sellers offering similar products,” she says. “My team and I are still working to overcome this challenge.”

Despite the hurdles, Mkhize remains optimistic and driven. She will be showcasing her products at the upcoming Business Symposium 2 & Career Expo, scheduled for 14 November 2025 at Winnie Mandela, Tembisa. Visitors can expect a variety of fragrances, car and home diffusers, skincare products, and more.

While Perfume Co. is not currently offering special discounts, Dimakatso confirms they will be introducing new fragrances at the event. “We want people to experience the variety and quality for themselves,” she adds.

She believes that community events like the Symposium play a crucial role in building and sustaining township businesses. “These events create exposure, collaboration, and customer trust. They help small businesses grow through visibility, networking, and shared learning,” she emphasizes.

According to Dimakatso, small businesses like Perfume Co. are essential for empowering young people in South Africa. “They provide first-time job opportunities, encourage innovation, and uplift communities,” she says.

When asked what advice she would share with aspiring entrepreneurs, her message is clear and powerful:

“Start. All you have to do is start. Many people have great ideas but never act on them — and later see others succeed with the same idea. So get up and start.”
