Building Positive Habits, One Teen at a Time

In a vibrant effort to combat the rising challenges affecting young people in South Africa’s townships, Teens On Mission Foundation, a youth empowerment organization based in Tembisa, hosted a two-day school holiday workshop at Thuto Ke Maatla High School. Focused on “Building Positive Habits,” the workshop welcomed teens aged 13 to 19 to explore, express, and engage in transformative activities aimed at shaping their futures.

At the heart of this life-changing initiative is Mpho Molangwane, founder and chairperson of Teens On Mission Foundation. As a teen mentor and the driving force behind the program, Mpho shares how the foundation is committed to addressing social issues such as teen pregnancy, school dropout rates, substance abuse, and violence—issues that plague far too many young lives in Tembisa.
“We saw the need for community education. Our goal is to help young people identify challenges that affect their wellbeing while emphasizing the importance of positive behavior. Through this, we help them build strong, healthy habits.”

A Two-Day Success: Highlights from the Workshop
The energy and engagement of the teens at both the girls’ and boys’ sessions were nothing short of inspiring. Mpho described the mood as “excited and vibrant,” with the young attendees fully immersed in the activities.
“They were really happy to be there. They engaged with their peers, asked questions, shared their concerns, and took part in experiential learning. The participation was amazing.”

Among the standout moments was a hands-on activity where teens created positive habit posters—a powerful visual representation of the lessons learned. During open discussions, many bravely spoke about personal issues, signaling the event’s safe and supportive environment.
“That moment where they had to share their thoughts really stood out. It showed us that they understood the message. They felt seen and heard.”

Structured Learning with a Creative Twist
Designed to be both educational and enjoyable, the workshops offered a balance of serious discussions and creative exercises. Key activities included:
- Open forums on teen behavior and decision-making
- Expert talks from professionals in child development
- Community mapping exercises focusing on safety
- Creative projects like poster-making
- Physical games to promote team building and healthy competition
“The sessions were tailored to resonate with each gender group. Girls’ discussions centered on issues they commonly face, while boys had their own tailored content where they could openly share their experiences.”

While the program ran smoothly, one persistent challenge highlighted by the organizers was the lack of sponsorship and materials. However, with strong planning and a cooperative group of teens, the core vision of the event was successfully achieved.

Community-Driven Support & Collaboration
This impactful initiative wasn’t achieved alone. The support from Thuto Ke Maatla High School, which provided the venue, was a critical contributor. The event also saw meaningful collaboration from local stakeholders such as:
- Ward Councillors
- SAPS & Community Policing Forum (CPF)
- Mpiloenhle Foundation (raising awareness on substance abuse)
- Udumo Arts and Crafts Foundation (creative expression)
- Serurubele-Jones Foundation (youth mentorship)
- Social Worker Connie Ratebe
- Community Advocate Cris Maseko (focusing on GBV)
“Community involvement is crucial. It creates awareness of services available, brings people together to share resources, and helps drive positive change.”

Shaping Future Leaders
The impact of the workshop extended beyond the two-day event. Many teens expressed a desire to take on leadership roles and become ambassadors for change.
“We saw young people who wanted to lead, to be role models. They asked how they could be involved with the foundation and help others.”
Looking ahead, Teens On Mission Foundation plans to roll out school visits, more holiday workshops, and mentorship programs that ensure continued engagement with youth throughout the year.

Reflection and Gratitude
For Mpho, the program was more than just a project—it was a calling.
“This experience meant changing a child’s life one step at a time. Being a support structure for children who need it. It reminded me why I do this.”
To all the teens who participated, her message is clear:
“Take what you’ve learned, share it with your peers, and remember that you have the power to shape your own future. Make the right choices and lead with purpose.”
