Tiego Skills Development and Training (TSDT) recently hosted the vibrant and impactful Scent and Craft Business Workshop, a forward-thinking initiative aimed at equipping young learners with hands-on skills in fragrance manufacturing and an introduction to acting, while nurturing creativity, business thinking, and self-confidence.
#YouthDevelopment #Entrepreneurship

This workshop was inspired by the learners themselves during a Research and Development (RND) project, where they were challenged to suggest new extracurricular activities not yet offered by the institution. Among the thoughtful proposals was the idea of fragrance creation—a unique concept that immediately sparked interest and opened doors to a more dynamic learning approach. In alignment with this, an acting component was also introduced, promoting self-expression and communication, crucial skills in both the performing arts and business development.

Learners had the exciting opportunity to produce their own perfumes and body lotions, while also participating in acting sessions focused on voice projection, stage presence, and storytelling. This holistic approach encourages personal growth and entrepreneurial readiness.

To lead these sessions, TSDT was honoured to welcome:
• Jimmy Kelaotse, founder of Kelaotse Fragrances, who provided expert training in fragrance development, including scent layering and branding insights.
• Puseletso Maropa, founder of Lelinda, who facilitated the acting sessions, teaching learners how to express themselves confidently—a skill they can apply both in personal development and in future business pitches or branding.

The workshop also included a Mad Money Skills program offered by The Money School, designed to prepare learners with essential money management skills before they gain or grow a business. Topics included budgeting, saving, planning, and basic financial decision-making.

Fifteen enthusiastic learners participated in the workshop:

These learners demonstrated remarkable energy, creativity, and dedication throughout the sessions. Their curiosity, teamwork, and innovation are exactly what TSDT aims to nurture.

Managing Director Xolane Gumbi expressed pride in the learners’ initiative and growth. According to him, the workshop is a testament to what can happen when learners are given a platform to contribute their ideas and passions:
“This workshop reflects the power of listening to our learners. They had the idea, and we turned it into something tangible. Our role as educators is to support their vision and equip them with the tools to make it a reality. I believe we’ve taken a solid step toward building future-ready entrepreneurs,” Gumbi said.

Supporting the workshop were dedicated TSDT staff members who played a crucial role in facilitation, mentorship, and learner support:
• Ndumiso Nkosi
• Aubrey Phalane
• Nomadlozi Nhlapo
• Serame Magoro

“Watching our learners transition from curious students to confident creators was incredibly rewarding,” said Aubrey Phalane.
“They’re not just learning a craft—they’re learning to believe in themselves,” added Nomadlozi Nhlapo.
“Financial skills are just as important as creative ones,” noted Serame Magoro. “They now understand how to manage and grow what they create.”

This workshop exemplifies TSDT’s commitment to learner-driven innovation, practical education, and entrepreneurship development. It’s not just about teaching new skills—it’s about preparing young people to build sustainable futures through passion, creativity, and the right support.
