My name is David Kgatle, and I am a proud Social Worker with the Central Gauteng Mental Health Society. In this role, I am committed to promoting mental health awareness and offering support to individuals and families dealing with intellectual and emotional challenges. My goal is to empower the people I serve and foster a more inclusive, compassionate society.

This initiative was born from a pressing need to address the misunderstandings and stigma surrounding intellectual disabilities in our communities. Through education, storytelling, and shared experiences, we aim to inspire dialogue and inclusion. The focus is not just on awareness—but on transformation: creating a society that values every life equally and embraces diversity in all forms.

Our collaboration with Mrs. Mabaso, who opened an NPO inspired by her son Tebogo Mabaso (born July-14-1982, living with a disability), is a testament to how personal stories often ignite powerful community movements. Her journey is a symbol of hope and resilience.

Children living with intellectual disabilities—and their families—face heartbreaking challenges. These include abuse, neglect, isolation, and limited access to support services. Emotional, physical, and even financial exploitation is sadly a reality for many. Acceptance often starts within the family, and without it, many suffer in silence.

To create truly inclusive communities, we must go beyond just accepting individuals with disabilities—we must actively support them. That includes accessible infrastructure, inclusive education, work opportunities, and public spaces that welcome everyone. Empathy and action must walk hand-in-hand.

This event also served a practical purpose. By requesting canned food as entry, we encouraged the community to engage meaningfully with the centre. These donations directly help our operations, enabling us to provide nutritious meals and continue offering therapeutic programs to those we serve.

To our attendees and readers, the message is clear: hope, understanding, and action. Let us create spaces where seeking help is not seen as weakness, but as a courageous first step. We must talk about intellectual disabilities openly, and break the chains of stigma that hold people back.

Getting involved doesn’t end here. We invite individuals and organizations to collaborate with us. From volunteering to resource sharing and educational initiatives, your partnership can make a tangible difference. Together, we can uplift more families and educate more hearts.

Mental health education is essential in shifting societal perceptions. When people learn the truth about intellectual disabilities, they begin to move away from fear and ignorance toward acceptance and respect. Education opens the door to empathy, reducing stigma and encouraging healthy conversations.

Our work is proudly supported by partners, including a disability NGO from the United States of America. Their involvement—previously including medical check-ups by visiting doctors—has brought immense value to our beneficiaries. It is a reminder that global partnerships can bring local impact.
