The South African National Aids Council (SANAC) is a body that has been tasked with bringing together the government, civil society, and the private sector to strengthen the fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and sexually transmitted diseases in South Africa. The organization hosted one of the biggest 3-day prison campaigns in the country when they visited Makhathe Correctional Centre in Kroonstad, Thaba Nchu, and Grootvlei Correctional Centre, respectively.
On November 27, 2023, one of the project activities was done with convicts, such as dialogues and music by the prison choir, and at the end of the day, the prison netball team and soccer team were gifted playing gear. 28 November 2023 was interaction day with convicts in Thaba Nchu in the form of a dialogue, and lastly, 29 November 2023 was interaction day with the prisoners of Grootvlei Correctional Services.
The CSF Correctional Services Project is divided into seven teams, each tasked with a specific issue to address, namely sports, arts and culture, faith, people living with HIV, women, men, and youth. Talking to South African Rainbow News, Lindy Mahlangu Dubplessis, who is the Provincial Coordinator for The Positive Women’s Network, a body tasked by SANAC to address some of the issues listed in the seven sectors, said, “Our visit to the prisons was to address underlying health issues faced by prisoners, to make sure that they are catered for, especially the issues of prisoners whom we feel were left out, to ensure they receive their ARVS, prep, and all their health issues are dealt with.”. Lindy Mahlangu expressed her commitment to the course as a person living with HIV for 25 years.
Mrs. Lindy Mahlangu Dubplessis highlighted to South African Rainbow News the importance of the organization’s cardinal point, which is the National Strategic Plan, which guides the organization on crucial key areas that are to be addressed firmly. “Our goal is to reach zero new HIV, TB, infections, discrimination, and deaths,” she said.
The SANAC Civil Society has played a huge role in giving a voice to the voiceless and the hopeless.

Such a good initiative, We also have such high numbers of new infections of TB and HIV in our jail (KZN WESTVILLE PRISON) we could like to also see more being done there especially the Key Population of people using drugs who infect each other easily outside and inside prison, we need to educate, salute Mrs Lindiwe Mahlangu and the whole team 👏
