ETWATWA, DAVEYTON – 04 JUNE 2026

The community of Etwatwa witnessed a significant step towards youth empowerment through the successful Bursary Opportunities Programme held on 04 June 2026 and facilitated by Boitumelo Foundation in partnership with SA Young Vision Advertising and Marketing. The initiative aimed to provide young people with access to information, guidance, and opportunities that can help them pursue higher education and improve their future prospects.

Founded in February 2018 by Cynthia Mtshali, Boitumelo Foundation has become a beacon of hope within the Etwatwa community. The name Boitumelo, meaning happiness and joy, reflects the organization’s mission of restoring dignity, providing support, and creating opportunities for vulnerable members of society, particularly the elderly, teenagers, and youth.

Cynthia Mtshali’s inspiration for establishing the foundation stems from her own life journey. After losing her mother at the age of seven, she was raised by her grandmother, whose love, sacrifice, and dedication left a lasting impact on her life. Following her grandmother’s passing, Cynthia committed herself to honouring her legacy by caring for elderly people within the community, particularly those living alone or raising grandchildren.

Today, Boitumelo Foundation continues to support elderly community members through monthly luncheon clubs, food parcel distributions, and hygiene support programmes. The foundation also promotes self-reliance and independence among its beneficiaries, encouraging them to remain active and maintain their dignity.

Recognising the growing challenges faced by unemployed youth and matriculants unable to access tertiary education due to financial constraints and limited institutional capacity, Boitumelo Foundation joined forces with SA Young Vision Advertising and Marketing to address the crisis.

The partnership focuses on connecting young people with educational opportunities, bursaries, skills development programmes, mentorship, and employment pathways. The Bursary Opportunities Programme was specifically designed to assist young people in understanding available funding opportunities and navigating the application process successfully.

Among the beneficiaries was Mahlatsi Amanda Seliki from Barcelona, Etwatwa, who attended the programme after hearing about it through a friend.

Seliki expressed her desire to further her studies in Foundation Phase Teaching due to her passion for working with children. She highlighted financial difficulties and limited access to bursary information as some of the major obstacles preventing many young people from pursuing higher education.

According to Seliki, the programme provided valuable information about available bursaries, application requirements, and strategies for preparing successful applications.

“The programme has helped me understand the bursary application process better by explaining the necessary documents and the importance of applying on time,” she said.

Seliki hopes to become a qualified Foundation Phase Teacher and contribute positively to the education sector by helping shape the lives of young learners. She encouraged fellow young people to remain determined and actively seek opportunities that can help them achieve their dreams.

Another beneficiary, Nkosinathi Shane Sibiya (21), from Etwatwa Extension 32, attended the programme after learning about it through word of mouth.

Sibiya indicated that financial challenges have been the primary barrier preventing him from furthering his studies. Interested in pursuing Accounting, he stated that he would also welcome any educational opportunity that could help him build a successful future.

Reflecting on the programme, Sibiya said it provided him with valuable knowledge about bursary application processes and encouraged him to continue fighting for his future despite challenges.

“Even if I am not selected, I am grateful for the opportunity to learn about bursary programmes and educational opportunities,” he said.

Sibiya further praised the organisers for creating an environment that was informative, supportive, and free from pressure, describing his experience as both positive and inspiring.

Boitumelo Foundation believes that access to education is one of the most effective tools for combating poverty, unemployment, and social inequality. Through continued mentorship programmes, skills development training, job placement support, and strategic partnerships, the organisation aims to ensure that beneficiaries successfully transition into higher education and sustainable employment.

The success of the initiative will be measured through the number of young people who secure bursaries, complete their studies, gain employment, establish income-generating opportunities, and improve their financial stability.

Looking ahead, the foundation’s next major initiative will focus on supporting elderly community members. As part of this year’s Mandela Day celebrations, Boitumelo Foundation plans to distribute warm winter blankets to senior citizens as a gesture of appreciation, care, and recognition of their contribution to society.

In its final message to young people, Boitumelo Foundation encouraged the youth to remain focused, disciplined, and committed to their goals.

“Always remember to put discipline before fun. Continue elevating yourselves and grab every opportunity presented to you with both hands.”

The foundation also called upon individuals, businesses, and organisations to partner through mentorship, funding, resource donations, and volunteerism to expand educational opportunities and strengthen youth development programmes throughout the community.
