Byline: Captain SA

Lindiwe Thwala, born in KwaZulu Natal, is a 39-year-old woman whose life has been intertwined with sports, particularly soccer. Her journey is not just about playing the game but also about evolving into a referee, a role she didn’t anticipate but embraced wholeheartedly.

Initially drawn to coaching, Lindiwe’s path diverted when she noticed a shortage of female referees and coaches in her region in 2011. Alongside her friend Gezekile Zungu, Lindiwe stepped into the realm of refereeing, becoming among the first female referees in the region. Despite the shift in roles, her background as a player eased the transition, and she found immense joy and fulfillment in her new position.

Beyond the field, soccer has been a guiding force in Lindiwe’s life, steering her away from negative influences and keeping her focused and fit. However, life threw unexpected challenges her way, notably the loss of her mother in 2018, which impacted her career. Struggling with fitness tests thereafter, Lindiwe found herself back as a Provincial referee, facing emotional and personal hurdles along the way.

Yet, resilience defines Lindiwe’s spirit. She acknowledges the transient nature of her refereeing career and plans for the future by pursuing a Body Strength & Conditioning course, aligning with her passion for fitness and helping athletes. She sees this as an opportunity not just locally but potentially internationally, reflecting her broad vision and ambition.

Throughout her journey, Lindiwe emphasizes the importance of education, humility, and seeking advice. She underscores the human aspect behind the referee’s role and acknowledges the constant evolution and updates in the laws of the game.

As she sets her sights on her new career path, Lindiwe’s story embodies adaptability, passion, and a relentless pursuit of personal and professional growth. Her journey is a testament to the transformative power of sports and the resilience of the human spirit.
