In 2012, during Wits University’s 90th anniversary celebrations, six outstanding students embarked on a life-changing tour of India. Among them was Thokozani “Sis Mpumi” Magwaza, a passionate foundation phase teaching student who would later become one of South Africa’s most influential mentors for young people. This trip not only highlighted the excellence of Wits University but also laid the groundwork for Magwaza’s life of service and leadership.

Today, the Wits Volunteer Programme, coordinated by Karuna Singh, supports more than 3 000 students with monthly food parcels and daily cooked meals. This initiative echoes the same spirit Magwaza has embodied throughout her life—compassion, mentorship and action. Singh recalled how Magwaza’s teaching stint in India inspired many, including young women such as Boikang and Paulina, whom Magwaza fondly referred to as her “Black Diamonds” during the 2010–2014 academic years.

Magwaza’s impact began long before her professional accolades. Known for her warmth and enthusiasm, she welcomed first-year students to Wits University even before the Vice-Chancellor’s official addresses during orientation. She quickly became a mother, mentor and life coach to countless young people from diverse backgrounds, guiding them to embrace their identity and potential.

Her career path is as diverse as her influence. After working at NBS Bank from 2000 to 2006, she served as a taxi association secretary before studying Banking and Communications. She later joined Standard Bank as a financial advisor in 2018 and, in 2019, became one of the most sought-after Natural Science education guides at the Durban Natural Science Museum and uShaka Marine World. When both contracts ended in 2020, Magwaza continued to dedicate herself to her “Black Diamonds”—orphans and vulnerable children she has supported since 2006.

That same year (2019), she also became a GBVF National Ambassador, working alongside various leaders, activists and survivors to combat gender-based violence and femicide across South Africa. This appointment underscored her commitment to advocacy and social justice beyond education.

Beyond education and activism, Magwaza has excelled in sports development. As an accredited Sharks Rugby Club coach and now a Tembisa Primary Schools community coach, she continues to nurture young talent. Since moving to Phomolong in 2010, she has offered daily homework assistance and personal support to children in her community, ensuring they grow up with self-worth and confidence.

A proud mother of three, Magwaza is loved by all she encounters, particularly her “Black Diamonds”—children who see themselves as “Black, Beautiful and Bright” under her mentorship. She also advises NPO boards, helping them refine their missions and objectives while navigating challenges that could hinder their ability to serve others.

Her accolades reflect her unwavering dedication:

  1. Phenomenal Woman of Absa Capital (2013–2014)
  2. Wits Student Development and Leadership Unit Award (2011–2012)
  3. Global Africa Camps Vocheli Award (2012)
