Daveyton, Benoni — Passion, perseverance, and purpose echo loudly through the voices of young athletes like Sibusiso Bhengu and Boitumelo Makudubela, two rising stars nurtured under the Gauteng Young Vision (GYV) sports development initiative. As the organization prepares for the official launch of the BEM (Boys Empowerment and Mentorship) & GEM (Girls Empowerment and Mentorship) Township Soccer and Netball Leagues on 06 June 2025 in Emaphupheni, Etwatwa, the stories of these athletes shine a spotlight on the transformative power of grassroots sports.

From Backyard Dreams to Township Heroes

For Sibusiso Bhengu, the dream started with a ball and a burning love for the game. “Honestly speaking, I just had a passion for soccer growing up,” says the central defensive midfielder, whose confidence and control on the pitch have flourished under GYV’s mentorship. “I’ve learned a lot. They built my confidence and made the game feel easier—now I’m looking for more to push me.”

Sibusiso values his role deeply: “I play CDM—I get to control the pace of the game. I’m vocal and always scanning, organizing my teammates.” With dreams of professional training and broader exposure, he sees the partnership with GYV—particularly its media integration—as a game-changer. “This means I’ll get professional training and exposure, especially because it’s also a media company.”

Inspired by Cristiano Ronaldo, he channels hard work, focus, and resilience into his daily grind. “I believe I can be of use. I’m friendly and supportive—and I play to win, treating every game like a final.”

Rising Through Adversity: A Netball Star in the Making

Meanwhile, Boitumelo Makudubela’s journey is a story of strength and self-determination. Introduced to netball by her mother as a path to both physical and mental wellness, Boitumelo started playing at age 11. She draws inspiration from national player Kamogelo Maseko, admiring her poise, focus, and determination on the court.

Specializing as a Goal Defender (GD), Boitumelo finds joy in her ability to disrupt opposing plays. “I like making sure the opposite team doesn’t get the ball—and if they do, I make sure it doesn’t reach the pole.”

Despite the challenges she’s faced—like balancing her matric year while pregnant and navigating pressure from family to pursue unwanted career paths—she remains grounded. “My daughter is my motivation. I want her to be proud of me.”
#MomAthlete #Resilience #MotivationMatters
Her goals reflect maturity and ambition: short-term aims include improving accuracy, passing, and court awareness, while her long-term dreams involve reaching regional or national teams. “Never give up on your dream no matter the challenges. Even professionals started from where we are.”
