The Institute for Healing of Memories, a nonprofit organization, continues to play a vital role in communities by creating safe and confidential spaces where individuals can share their lived experiences without fear of judgment. Through its work, the organization focuses on helping people heal from trauma—whether from past experiences, actions taken, or missed opportunities—while also facilitating dialogues that address social issues such as gender-based violence and historical wounds.

The Human Trafficking Dialogue was inspired by the urgent need to address a growing issue that is often overlooked. The organizers emphasized the importance of creating a platform where community members can openly discuss human trafficking, understand its warning signs, and learn preventative measures. The session aimed to empower individuals with knowledge to protect themselves and respond effectively to potential threats.

In communities like Endulweni, where unemployment and poverty remain significant challenges, young people are particularly vulnerable to exploitation. Traffickers often prey on desperation, using false job opportunities, romantic manipulation, and social media platforms to lure victims. This reality highlights the importance of ongoing awareness and education within communities.

Participants shared powerful reflections on how the dialogue transformed their understanding. Ntsetselelo Precious Mathonsi, representing Nyiko Aftercare Drop-in Centre, expressed how her perception shifted. She previously believed human trafficking only occurred in busy urban areas like Pretoria Central and Johannesburg, but now understands that it can happen anywhere—even within local communities—and sometimes involves people known to the victims.

Mathonsi highlighted that key lessons included identifying common tactics used by traffickers, such as exploiting unemployment, romantic relationships, and social media. She committed to sharing this knowledge within her network and supporting awareness initiatives moving forward.

Girly Phiri from Alexandra, representing a Traditional Healers Organization, described the dialogue as an eye-opening experience. She noted that she previously believed human trafficking did not affect her personally, but has now come to understand that even close acquaintances can be involved in such activities. Her message emphasized the importance of vigilance and community unity.

Mosa Motlanthe from Alexandra also reflected on how the session reshaped her understanding. Initially, she believed human trafficking was mainly driven by foreign perpetrators. However, she now recognizes the complexity of the issue within local communities, where children frequently go missing. She stressed the importance of building strong relationships with children, staying involved in their lives, and working collectively as a community to protect them.

Motlanthe further called for stronger collaboration between community patrollers and law enforcement agencies, emphasizing that safety requires collective responsibility. Her insights echoed the broader message of the dialogue: awareness must lead to action.

The Human Trafficking Dialogue proved to be more than just an educational session—it was a call to action. Attendees described it as informative, impactful, and necessary, encouraging others to participate in similar initiatives in the future. The shared commitment to raising awareness and protecting one another stood out as a powerful outcome of the event.
