Last term marked the close of Mrs Salie’s remarkable career as she stepped into a well-deserved retirement. As she was unable to attend school on the final Friday of the previous term due to the Eco Crusaders Indaba, a special assembly was held today to give learners the opportunity to bid her farewell in a meaningful and memorable way.

Mrs Salie is not only a proud former learner of Uitenhage High School but has also served as a dedicated educator at the institution since 1994. For 32 years, she committed her life to teaching, guiding, and inspiring generations of learners.

On behalf of the Eco Crusaders, Zoey Erasmus delivered a heartfelt tribute in her honour before Mrs Salie addressed the school with words that reflected both wisdom and gratitude.

Reflecting on her journey, Mrs Salie shared a beautiful full-circle moment:

“Long before I became a teacher, I was a learner sitting in these classrooms. I remember my high school educator, Mr Cowie, who taught me Biology in Room 51 in matric. I was often very talkative, and he moved me to the front of the class. It now makes me smile to think that the same talkative learner later taught Life Sciences in that very same classroom, Room 51, from 1994.”

She encouraged learners to see Life Sciences as more than just diagrams and definitions:

“You are not just marks on your report. You are potential, you are purpose, you are possibility. Never allow failure to define you. Even in Life Sciences, mutation sometimes creates the strongest survivors. Sit in the front row of your own life. Speak up, ask questions, be curious.”

Speaking to her colleagues, she reflected on the strong bonds formed over the years:

“You were my ecosystem. In Natural Sciences, we teach about interdependence. An ecosystem cannot survive if one part fails. In the same way, every person in a school community plays a role in helping one another grow.”

For more than three decades, Mrs Salie witnessed generations of learners grow into professionals, parents, and even colleagues:

“That is the power of teaching. We do not always see the harvest, but we plant the seeds.”

As she concluded her address, she left the school community with a powerful reminder:

“Keep learning, keep growing, keep adapting. Be the scientist of your own future and remember that education changes lives. I leave, but my roots remain here.”

Today, we honour and thank Mrs Salie for 32 years of dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment to the learners of Uitenhage High School. Her legacy lives on in every classroom she taught in, every learner she inspired, and every seed she planted along the way.

Though she leaves the classroom, she will forever remain a cherished part of the story of Uitenhage High.

“Let us live for our children.”
