CF Astana Youth Development Team RSA is more than just a football club — it is a community-driven initiative committed to shaping young lives through sport. Founded and led by Siphamandla Meshack Hlatshwayo, a coach and chairman, the club is based in Chief Albert Luthuli Phase 3 Extension 6 under Cloverdene and continues to stand as a pillar of hope for young athletes in the area.

The journey of CF Astana began in 2015, following a relocation from Daveyton Gabon to Chief Albert Luthuli. Before the move, the team was active under Gabon Survivors FC in Daveyton. However, the relocation meant leaving behind some players, which led to a fresh recruitment drive within the local community. This transition gave birth to CF Astana, officially established on 15 March 2015, with a renewed mission to develop local talent.

Today, CF Astana competes across multiple platforms, including the Imbewu Enhle Festive Tournament and the Ama Games Ka Skopo Senior Tournament. According to Hlatshwayo, the experience has been both exciting and eye-opening, especially for young players who are participating in major tournaments for the first time. The squad is largely made up of players aged 16 to 18, with the oldest being just 21 years old, making exposure at this level a crucial step in their development.

Participation in these tournaments is not just about competition but opportunity. The club aims to position its players for potential recruitment by teams competing in the Hollywood Regional League, ABC Motsepe League, DDC teams, and beyond. “We are playing with young blood,” says Hlatshwayo, emphasizing the long-term vision of opening professional pathways for deserving players.

CF Astana also competes in the Benoni North Local Football Association League, fielding teams in Under 11, 13, 15, 17, and Senior divisions. Structured league football, Hlatshwayo explains, is vital for nurturing talent and preparing players for professional environments. It instills discipline, consistency, and professionalism — qualities required when opportunities in higher leagues arise.

Despite its growth and impact, the club faces serious challenges. A lack of sponsorship has resulted in ongoing struggles with soccer kits, training equipment, transport, food, and match-day expenses. These financial constraints had devastating consequences during the 2024/2025 season, where CF Astana was unable to complete the league due to outstanding fees.

Yet, even amid these challenges, CF Astana has produced notable talent. Players such as Asanda Mthethwa (ABC Motsepe League – MP), Matlakane Simelane, and Sibongakonke Hlatshwayo (both with Cambridge FC Ekurhuleni in the Hollywood Regional League) are living proof of the club’s impact. Friendly matches against teams like Resa, Stars of Africa, School of Excellence, and Orlando Pirates FC have further strengthened player development.

Beyond football, CF Astana plays a critical social role in the community. The club actively keeps young people away from crime, drugs, and negative influences, offering football and netball as positive alternatives. The team also hosts annual youth tournaments during September school holidays, with plans underway for the 4th Annual CF Astana Youth Cup in 2026.

The club’s long-term vision is ambitious yet grounded. Hlatshwayo dreams of seeing CF Astana compete in the Motsepe Championship (NFD) or even the DStv Premiership (PSL). Over the next three to five years, the target is to secure a spot in the ABC Motsepe League Gauteng.

CF Astana is appealing to local businesses, community members, and potential sponsors to come on board. The club believes partnerships with entities such as the Benoni Taxi Association and Cloverdale Shopping Centre could significantly change its trajectory. In return, sponsors receive visibility through soccer kits branding and promotion across the club’s social media platforms.

Hlatshwayo’s motivation remains deeply personal. “Football saved my life,” he says. “Without football, I might have ended up in drugs or worse. I am giving back to protect the youth and give them a future.” This passion continues to fuel the club despite the odds.

Looking ahead, CF Astana will be hosting player trials from 03 to 05 January 2026 at Sasol Ground. Trials are open for Under 9, 11, 13, 15, and 17, for both boys and girls. A R20 registration fee applies, with training kits and refreshments provided. Players are only required to bring their soccer boots and socks.
