Journalists are going through hard times in their occupational field due to challenges they encounter during investigations, especially when it comes to uncovering the truth in certain organizations.

Furthermore, exposing someone might have unfavorable effects. Nonetheless, journalists put up a lot of effort in their line of work, covering a variety of issues that advance loyalty and benefit society. They frequently experience severe consequences, including threats, arrest, and torture. On a daily basis, journalists work on various cases with different goals. While some aim to keep the community updated with news, others work tirelessly to find the truth, particularly in cases of corruption.

During the investigation, accessing relevant sources and perpetrators in places of corruption is not easy, and obtaining proper evidence can be challenging. “Most cases of corruption involve many people, making it difficult to identify who is accountable, who can be trusted, and who might be responsible for the corruption, which increases the challenges,” stated Miss Kholofelo Ngoepe, an investigative journalist from amaBhungane. When dealing with exposing corruption, one must ensure they are on the right track to avoid getting into much trouble.

The process might not be simple for every journalist working on a corruption investigation. Although dealing with corruption is challenging, strategies such as interviewing people, visiting sectors to confirm claims, locating reliable sources, and writing honestly should be considered. “I went to the organization I was investigating to assess and verify the information I had. This strengthened my evidence and ensured I identified the right perpetrator,” said Miss Kholofelo. Verification of information during the investigation is crucial.

Journalism requires someone with a strong passion for the field. Not everyone can become a journalist due to the inherent challenges. “Journalism needs someone who loves it, someone with strength and courage, especially an ethical journalist. Do it to reveal the truth and promote loyalty,” stated Miss Kholofelo. Journalists should always cover cases that concern people’s interests rather than their own to ensure they uncover the truth properly. It is essential to pursue a career you are passionate about. Hence, be unique, think for yourself, and never let others make decisions for you. Don’t follow the herd.
