In the heart of Tembisa, a township pulsating with resilience and community spirit, a remarkable initiative has taken root. T-SHAD (Tembisa Self Help Association of the Disabled) has broken ground, both literally and metaphorically, by planting 100 lemon trees on April 29, 2024. This pioneering endeavor marks a significant milestone for the 34-year-old organization, founded with a vision of empowerment and inclusivity for persons with disabilities.

Situated at 484 Dan Tloome Road, Esangweni Section, Tembisa, T-SHAD embodies the enduring legacy of its late founder, Manus Buswane Malinga. Malinga, a visionary leader who himself was visually impaired, instilled within the organization a commitment to fostering independence and dignity among its members. Inspired by his mentor, Friday Mavuso, the founder of the Self Help Association of the Paraplegic (SHAP), Malinga championed the cause of inclusivity, laying the foundation for T-SHAD’s mission and values.

Under the stewardship of Brian Gezani Ndhlovu, the Centre Manager, T-SHAD has flourished, evolving into a hub of innovation and empowerment. Ndhlovu’s dedication to the organization’s mission is evident in every aspect of its operations, from the meticulous planning of projects to the nurturing of partnerships with local stakeholders. With his leadership, T-SHAD has expanded its reach, supporting a network of 196 members and volunteers and forging strategic alliances with organizations like SAYM and Thembalethu Development Foundation.

The lemon tree planting initiative signifies more than just a horticultural endeavor; it represents a holistic approach to community development. With a sprawling 2.4-hectare premises brimming with diverse projects, including recycling, small-scale farming, and wheelchair repairs, T-SHAD stands as a beacon of possibility and progress. Supporting a network of 196 members and volunteers, the organization has forged strategic partnerships with entities like SAYM and Thembalethu Development Foundation, enriching the fabric of Tembisa through social employment programs and educational opportunities.

The decision to embark on the lemon tree planting initiative was driven by a desire to promote sustainable agriculture, foster economic empowerment, and enhance the aesthetic appeal of the community. By engaging persons with disabilities in every stage of the project, from planting to maintenance, T-SHAD underscores the principles of inclusivity and participation. Despite challenges in securing funding and accessing suitable land, the organization persevered, drawing strength from the unwavering dedication of its members.

One cannot overlook the profound symbolism inherent in witnessing individuals with disabilities passionately tending to the soil, sowing the seeds of change for future generations. As these lemon trees take root and flourish, they promise to yield a bounty of benefits for the local community—from providing a sustainable source of fresh produce to creating employment opportunities and enriching the environment.

Looking ahead, T-SHAD envisions a future brimming with possibility and purpose. Plans are underway to expand existing programs, including the recycling initiative, and to launch new ventures such as an enterprise development incubation program and an Artisans Skills Training Center. By fostering skills development and vocational training, T-SHAD aims to empower its members to realize their full potential and contribute meaningfully to society.

As T-SHAD extends an open invitation for support and collaboration, it sends a resounding message of hope and resilience. Individuals and organizations alike are encouraged to join hands in championing the cause of inclusivity, sustainability, and community empowerment. Together, we can cultivate a future where every individual, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to thrive and flourish.
